1972, The Former Yugoslavia
Yes, 1972! In August 1972 after my Army Active Duty Tour ended, Cheryl and I drove from our home in Mannheim, Germany to the former Yugoslavia. After stops in Germany and Austria, we entered the former Yugoslavia and explored and camped our way along the Adriatic coast and into the interior of the country. Forty-five years later, in 2017, we returned to the same area on a Lindblad-National Geographic trip that included visits to Dubrovnik and Split. It was fascinating to see the changes that have come since the fall of Communism and the independence of the parts of the former Yugoslavia. But it was also heart-breaking to see the damage that still remans in Bosnia-Herzegovina following the war in the early 1990’s. We showed these photos to our shipmates and the expedition staff, and to the local guides who shared their knowledge and love of their countries. We hope that this website will allow a broader sharing of these images from nearly a half a century ago.
