Chile, again!
November 2014
This was our fourth trip to Chile and a rather unusual one for us. Oregon State University had arranged a tour of Chilean Forestry Resources and we participated as forest land owners and because of our work to promote sustainable forestry in Pennsylvania. We visited plantation forests of eucalyptus and radiata pine, sawmills, research labs, experimental forests, and port facilities. We began our trip with several days in Santiago, visiting old haunts, favorite shops, and the Chilean woman with whom Cheryl lived in 2012 when she was studying Spanish. The trip included sightseeing, favorite wine bars, restaurants, and a winery. We stayed in a cabin on a small river near Villarrica not far from the Villarrica Volcano. Four months later, the volcano erupted for the first time since 1985, melted the ice cap, forced the evacuation of thousands, flooded rivers and, perhaps, the cabin in which we stayed!
