Newfoundland 2015
September 2015, Canadian Maritimes
Our Lindblad / National Geographic expedition circumnavigated Newfoundland on the 140-passenger National Geographic Explorer. After a few days exploring the colorful and Celtic-influenced St. John’s, Newfoundland, we sailed to St. Pierre and Miquelon, France’s last remaining colony in North America. We explored the restored Fortress of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. In Baddeck, the Alexander Graham Bell intrigued us and later we toured the bay in a sail boat. Naturalists, historians and geologists led us on our many stops along the way. Finally, we visited the windy, barren site where Vikings lived 500 years before Columbus landed in the Americas, L’anse aux Meadows. It was the culmination of our following Cheryl’s Viking ancestors from Norway to Iceland to Greenland to a piece of North America jutting into the blustery, northern Atlantic Ocean!
