PSO Patron Tour
October – November 2019
With a small group of patrons, we accompanied the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra on a portion of their European Tour. We attended concerts in the Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg), Berlin Philharmonie, the Musikverein (Vienna), and the Gasteig (Munich). These venues ranged from the ultra-modern, acoustically-engineered Elbphilharmonie which opened in 2017 to the 1870 Musikverein. The later is a classic, shoebox-shaped concert hall which was the favorite of the PSO musicians because of its acoustics, appearance, and history. We enjoyed sightseeing in each city, dining with the musicians on several occasions, and a tour of the Steinway & Sons manufacturing plant in Hamburg.
After the Munich concert, Cheryl and I rented a car and drove to Garmisch in the Bavarian Alps for a few more days of sightseeing and reminiscing. This was one of our favorite areas when we lived in Germany (1970-1974). We again enjoyed Garmisch, Oberammergau, Mittenwald, and a tram ride to the summit of the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany.
